It has been just over two years since Jurgen Klopp departed his role as Liverpool manager.

The iconic German coach has been embracing life away from the dugout after choosing to bring his eight-and-a-half-year tenure at Anfield to an end. The Premier League and Champions League-winning boss revealed he intended to take a break from management when he bid his farewells.

In January 2025, he took up a position as Red Bull's head of global soccer, overseeing the company's network of clubs. It was later confirmed that the 58-year-old would also be joining the German Football League (DFL) on an expert panel aimed at improving the game, alongside his responsibilities with Red Bull.

Yet Klopp's departure from Liverpool has also afforded him greater opportunity to step back from the sport. The Reds legend has opened up about his family life, having previously dedicated himself entirely to football as both a player and manager. Liverpool.com takes a closer look at Klopp's world beyond Anfield.

Life after leaving UK

Klopp and his wife, Ulla, have spent part of their time building their dream home in Mallorca after purchasing a villa in 2022. The couple was reported to be undertaking a complete renovation of the 5,000sqm property, while also said to be having a home constructed in the German city of Wiesbaden, allowing them to remain close to their family.

The German remains committed to his responsibilities at Red Bull while also valuing the improved work-life balance his current role provides him. He told CBS Sports: "We go on holiday when we want and not when we are allowed to.

"You can organize everything like that, and we have Mario Gomez; he will take over. He can go on holiday, I can go on holiday, one of us is here and is doing the job, informs the other one. The world will not change overnight just because we are a week somewhere, and that's how it should be, and it never was, and now it is like that."

Wife's thoughts on decision

Jurgen and Ulla wed in 2005, and the former Liverpool manager has outlined his wife's impact on his career decisions. The German coach previously revealed that a remark from Ulla led him to sign a contract extension with the Reds until 2026. Klopp had been due to depart Anfield in 2024 before agreeing to fresh terms in 2022.

Though he would ultimately leave before his new deal expired, Klopp said at the time: "The most important contract I signed in my life was the one with Ulla. And that's why it started again, because actually we sat at the kitchen table and Ulla said, 'I can't see us leaving in 2024.' I said, 'What?' That's how it all started, and when that started, I thought, 'Let's have a think.'"

Liverpool return

Klopp returned to the Liverpool dugout as Kenny Dalglish's assistant for the annual legends match at Anfield in March. The Reds faced Borussia Dortmund, another of the manager's former clubs. Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Thiago and Jay Spearing, before Mohamed Zidan and Jan Koller leveled the scores.

"I enjoyed every second," Klopp said after the match. "My role was definitely not to have a lot of words. I was here for the Foundation and to be part of a really special experience.

"For me, a very special experience after a while – being around, being that close, seeing all the Liverpool lads and then seeing the Dortmund lads as well because that was like 80 percent of my players. And you don't meet very often and have them all together in one room. It's really cool."

New role

While Klopp already manages two roles, the 58-year-old has confirmed he will be taking on yet another challenge as a pundit this summer. He is set to cover the World Cup for Magenta TV, but teased a return to management in a social media post announcing his new role.

"Many of you have always known better. But I truly couldn't envision it for myself," Klopp said in a voiceover. "Going back to the sideline? I don't miss anything. This is what I always thought. But now it is tingling again. Grass underneath my feet. The heated atmosphere in the stadium. And I want to be really close again."

He added: "Oh? No, not as a manager. I am becoming a pundit for Magenta TV at the FIFA World Cup 2026."
