Over the past few months, Sport Witness has covered claims of Arsenal interest in Atlético Madrid’s Julián Alvarez.
On April 20th, we relayed news the Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain are trying to convince him to pick them over Barcelona.
Later that month, Diego Simeone said it’s understandable that Arsenal, PSG and Barcelona are all keen on the striker.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of the Premier League side’s intermediaries approaching Los Rojiblancos. The latter are aware the player and his agent have given their approval for a summer move.
Arsenal and PSG pursuing Alvarez
Thursday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo states Atlético Madrid want to resolve the 26-year-old’s future quickly.
The Madrid club want to avoid a saga involving the Argentina international to drag on for most part of the window and impact other potential deals.
Diego Simeone’s side don’t have the financial need to raise funds. Therefore, they are demanding a ‘substantial sum’ of well over €100m, with Metropolitano sources suggesting at least €150m.
Julián Alvarez favours a move to Barcelona, but they have no intention of meeting Atlético’s demands.
The La Liga winners’ plan is to lower the price by including some of their own players as part of the deal. This formula doesn’t please everyone in Madrid.
Mikel Arteta’s side and PSG have been pursuing the World Cup winner for some time, and both have the financial muscle to match the price.
El Desmarque report the Spanish club have rejected three offers for the South American in the last year.
The Gunners offered €120m during the Club World Cup in June 2025 and PSG saw their approach turned down in the winter market. Barcelona recently offered €70m plus Ferran Torres, also rejected by their La Liga counterpart.
El Desmarque journalist Rubén Uría points it out and insists these clubs haven’t returned with new offers.
“I can assure you that there is no official offer on the table for Atlético de Madrid. None whatsoever. Not from Barcelona, not from Paris Saint-Germain, not from Arsenal. Zero,” he said.
Our take: Quick exit unlikely
Julián Alvarez’s immediate focus will be on the upcoming World Cup where he’s likely to lead Argentina’s attack.
Atlético Madrid are requesting a big fee to part ways with the frontman and want a quick sale.
