Celtic-Linked Star Reaches ‘Agreement’ with Premier League Club

The Andy Robertson to Celtic speculation was never going to disappear from the conversation this summer. The links were inevitable the minute it became clear his Liverpool chapter was nearing its end.

For supporters, it was an easy rumour to buy into. A boyhood Celtic fan, one of the best left-backs Scotland has produced, potentially available at the same time Celtic are short in that area of the park.

But it always felt more romantic than realistic.

Now it looks finished before it ever properly started.

According to the BBC, Robertson has reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of a move this summer. Juventus were credited with late interest, but the Scotland captain appears set to remain in the Premier League.

It closes the door on one of the more fanciful bits of transfer speculation doing the rounds in recent months.

Robertson confirmed back in April that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season after a remarkable spell at Anfield.

Two Premier League titles, a Champions League medal, domestic cups and years operating at the highest level under Jurgen Klopp made him one of the most successful Scottish players of the modern era.

His rise was hardly straightforward.

Robertson started at Queen’s Park before Dundee United took a chance on him in 2013. One standout season at Tannadice earned him a move to Hull City, and Liverpool arrived three years later.

From there, his career took off.

Celtic’s need for a left-back remains obvious regardless of the Robertson noise.

Kieran Tierney is currently the only recognised senior option in the position. Marcelo Saracchi has returned to Boca Juniors, leaving the club short in an area that badly needs depth before the season starts.

There has still been no permanent move lodged for the Uruguayan despite earlier reports suggesting Celtic were weighing up the possibility. That situation could yet change if the player shows interest in returning permanently.

But Robertson was always operating in a different bracket financially and competitively.

Even with the emotional pull of Celtic, the reality was that a player still capable of playing at Premier League level was unlikely to swap that immediately for a return to Scotland.

Supporters can stop wondering about this one now. Robertson’s next move looks settled, and Celtic will need to look elsewhere.
