Even the undeniable aura of Xabi Alonso could not change Enzo Fernandez's mind when it comes to his summer plans.

Those Chelsea supporters who have wanted the Argentine midfielder to stick around will have hoped the presence of Alonso would be enough to persuade him. However, Fernandez's mind has already been made up, it seems, with the midfielder, who signed for £106.7million three-and-a-half years ago, expressing his desire to leave this summer.

Chelsea want to keep Fernandez around, sources say, however the club will not stand in the Argentine's way should they receive an offer of £120m. If that does come their way, it would represent a healthy profit for the Blues after signing him from Benfica in January 2023.

Real Madrid are the favourites to sign Fernandez this summer, though there is also interest from Manchester City with Enzo Maresca set to be confirmed as Pep Guardiola's successor in the near future. Fernandez has a strong relationship with the former Chelsea head coach, and sources close to the midfielder suggest he was devastated when he left Stamford Bridge on New Year's Day.

Madrid are long-term admirers of Fernandez but would have to break their own transfer record if they are serious about bringing the Chelsea star to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Even if Fernandez does end up staying at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are looking to add a starting-level central midfielder to their ranks this summer. They should look no further than Madrid, with Eduardo Camavinga reportedly set to depart the Spanish capital in the coming months.

Reports claim Madrid will demand €80m (£69.3m) for the France international, who was left out of Didier Deschamps' World Cup squad this summer. The 23-year-old midfielder was in and out of the Madrid side throughout the course of the recently-concluded 2025/26 campaign - sparking speculation over his future.

There are plenty of pros when it comes to Camavinga and what he could offer Chelsea. Not least his experience, even though he is just 23, of playing at the top level. The Frenchman covers space well, he is effective when recycling possession and would seemingly suit Alonso's style of play.

Alonso also coached Camavinga at the Bernabeu so he will know better than most what sort of player he would be bringing with him to Chelsea. The Madrid midfielder was effectively a Swiss-army knife during Alonso's tenure - the former Los Blancos boss used him in various positions in the 2025/26 season.

His injury record needs to be mentioned. While not on the Romeo Lavia's unfortunate level of injury proneness, muscular problems have disrupted Camavinga's consistency and his progress therefore. There are countless things to consider; not just with Camavinga but with any potential incoming.

One thing is for sure, though: Chelsea are prioritising bringing in a centre-back, central midfielder and left-sided winger this summer, football.london understands, and Alonso is aligned with the sporting directors when it comes to the club's transfer plans.
