Anthony Gordon is set to fly to Barcelona today to complete his medical ahead of a move from Newcastle United.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed they are set to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
The news comes just days after he told supporters the club will not make signings “for show” after La Liga allowed them to loosen the purse strings. While Barca’s rivals, Real Madrid, are synonymous with the “Galacticos” mantra - with glitz and glamour signings galore - a brief period of reckless spending plunged the Catalans into financial ruin.
In 2021, the La Liga giants almost went bankrupt and faced crippling debts worth over £1billion. A club previously built on its famous La Masia academy turned to high-profile additions - and the move backfired.

Barcelona were forced into several drastic decisions - including selling 25 per cent of domestic TV revenue for 25 years. La Liga placed heavy measures on Barca to prohibit spending in recent years.
But as of this summer, they have returned to the 1:1 rule - allowing them to use every penny the club generates on new players. As a result, this has allowed Hansi Flick to add Newcastle star Gordon to his ranks.
Barcelona want Anthony Gordon
The ruling came last week, giving the Catalans a major boost ahead of the summer transfer window. And just days later, Barca have beaten Bayern Munich in the race to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon.
It is understood that the 25-year-old is heading to Catalonia for a medical later today. An early exit works for both parties, with the Magpies always hoping to secure Gordon’s sale before he heads to the World Cup.
A week ago, Bayern appeared to be in the driving seat for Gordon’s signature. However, Barca have gazumped the Bavarians after Deco met with the winger’s representatives.
Barca president confirms Anthony Gordon transfer
Speaking to local media, Laporta confirmed that Gordon is heading to the Camp Nou with a brief update last night. He said: “The Gordon deal is being done but it is not completed yet. I have already been informed about everything.”
Joan Laporta sets transfer vision
Barca president Laporta vowed at the weekend to stick to the 1:1 ruling - insisting the days of crazy spending are over. But it is understood that the La Liga champions do have room in the kitty to meet Gordon’s price tag.
“Being within the 1:1 rule is positive, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to go crazy or spend lavishly,” he told MD at the weekend. “We’re going to implement whatever Deco says. He’s shown he does things well, and we have to let him work
“(The objective will be) to reinforce specific positions that Deco and Flick have studied. It’s not about making signings for show. The fans understand that we have a very strong team. We don’t rule anyone out because Barca can pursue all the top players. We are the ones who set the conditions.”
