Liverpool have decided against using a clause to bring Jarrel Quansah back from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
BILD report that the defender will be remaining with the German side until at least 2027. The Reds clause for this summer is set to expire shortly.
Liverpool transfer option
The newspaper explain that Liverpool secured a buy-back option for both 2026 and 2027 when they sold Quansah for €35m last summer. The clause for this summer is set to expire shortly, though.
BILD have learned that the Reds do not intend to bring the 23-year-old back this summer. they would have had to pay €80m to do so.
Bringing Jarrel Quansah was a seriously possibility for Arne Slot’s side after a season fraught with defensive issues. But they are instead leaving him in Germany for another season.
The plan is to let him develop further as a leader at Leverkusen and then return to Liverpool as a key player in 2027. They can sign him for €60m next summer. That valuation could be right on the money, with the defender currently valued at €45m.
That could rise with another solid season in Germany and, potentially, a role at the World Cup. He’s in England’s squad for the tournament under Thomas Tuchel. The valuation means he’s already Bayer Leverkusen’s most valuable player.
Long-term Liverpool plan
But it seems Liverpool have a long-term plan with him. And that doesn’t include spending €80m to bring him back to Anfield this summer.
The Reds already have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez as centre-back options. Jeremey Jacquet is set to add to that mix when he joins in the summer as well.
Leoni is still battling back from a long-term injury, though, and new deals for Konate and Van Dijk are yet to be announced either. So, there could be a place for Quansah in the mix, but Liverpool don’t intend to bring him back until 2027.
