“I’m Coming Back”–Regular Arsenal First Team Starter Confirms Intention To Return Home

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori says he will return to play in Italy “sooner or later”.

Speaking to Cronache di Spoliatoio (quotes via Goal Italy), Calafiori said he joined the Gunners to challenge himself, and while he is perfectly happy at the Emirates, he is expecting to move back to Serie A at some point in the future:

“I made it, I wanted to get out of the comfort zone. But sooner or later I think I’m coming back, as you’re in Italy, you’re not [going] anywhere.”

“I have outstanding experiences there too, like playing in Rome. Now, I feel great at Arsenal, and I can’t wait to play the Champions League final.”

Arsenal have him contracted to the club for 3 more years

Despite Calafiori’s remarks, there won’t be any urgency to extend his current deal. He signed a five-year contract when he made the switch from Bologna in July 2024, which means he is currently set to stay until 2029.

The defender has proven to be a big asset at left-back, especially this season, having shown that he is strong both defensively and in attacking positions.

For that reason, there would be no consideration given to letting him go if an offer from Italy does arrive over the coming weeks/months.

Calafiori is likely to start in Budapest

The 24-year-old was substituted at halftime against Crystal Palace last weekend, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of the Champions League final.

Injuries have been a constant issue for Calafiori since his move to England, but his comments suggest he will be fit to face Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday evening.

He has competition for his starting spot from Piero Hincapie, but manager Mikel Areta has tended to favour the Italian when he is fit and available.
