Why Geovany Quenda is having‘sleepless nights’ahead of Chelsea move

Geovany Quenda will arrive at Chelsea this summer after his season-long loan came to an end at Sporting Lisbon, and the winger has bid farewell to his boyhood club with an emotional interview.

Rewind to March 2025, and Chelsea announced they had completed a £62m double deal to sign duo Quenda and Dario Essugo. Essugo joined Chelsea in the summer, but Quenda remained at Sporting.

Why has Alejandro Garnacho been such an unpopular signing? 🤯

As in many cases when Chelsea sign a young player, Quenda remained at his boyhood club on loan for a season. It is something Chelsea have done with Andrey Santos, Mike Penders, Kendry Paez and more.

Now, Quenda has played his final game for Sporting ahead of his Chelsea move and the winger has been speaking about finally leaving. The winger opens up on the emotional pull it has been to say goodbye.

Quenda will have wished he was able to contribute more in his final season at Sporting, having suffered a broken foot and only managed to return to action towards the end of the season. He played 32 times.

He’s tallied up 15 goals and assists, a solid return from the ninth-best teenager in world football. Now, in an interview with Sporting TV as per A Bola, Quenda says how he hopes to play for Sporting in the future.

“I had nights where I couldn’t sleep because it was very difficult for me to say goodbye to a club that helped me and my family so much. It’s a very special club for me. “The club will always stay in my heart.

“I have no way to thank Sporting enough for how they treated my parents and my family. I’m more mature now, with a bit more experience, although there is still a lot for me to live in football,” he said.

“But Sporting helped me so much. I will always carry Sporting in my heart. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon. I hope one day I can wear the Sporting shirt again,” Quenda continued, ahead of his Chelsea move.

What happens with Geovany Quenda this summer?

There is no doubt that one of the priority positions Chelsea need this summer is a left-sided winger. Quenda, who can play on either side, will be desperate to make an impact under new boss Xabi Alonso.

It will be up to Alonso, and the Spaniard will not yet have made a decision. But Alonso will know that already have four young wingers in Jesse Derry, Alejandro Garnacho, Estevao and Jamie Gittens.

Adding another youngster into that mix leaves Chelsea with raw talent in the final third, but without many proven options. Does Alonso loan Quenda out again? Or does he give him a chance in the first team.

That decision is not yet known. Quenda is a supreme talent and many have given up with Garnacho. Gittens has almost been forgotten about, but is Quenda the answer to Chelsea’s left-sided needs?
