Alan Varela Discusses Potential Premier League Transfer Amid Liverpool And Man United Links

Porto midfielder Alan Varela says he is “100% focused” on his current club, despite the interest being shown in him from Liverpool and Manchester United.

Argentinian newspaper La Nacion claims that the 24-year-old has “caught the attention” of the two Premier League teams, and when asked about the prospect of moving to England, he replied:

“I’m calm and 100% focused here at Porto. My representative deals with all those topics. Right now I’m not thinking about that…”

“My objective is to be in the World Cup squad. Honestly, I’m not thinking about transfers at the moment.”

Varela was first mentioned as a target 2 years ago

The midfielder moved to Porto from Boca Juniors in the summer of 2023, and before the end of his first season in Portugal, Liverpool had already been credited with an interest.

Nothing came of those rumours, though, and Varela has now been with his current team for three campaigns.

The Argentine is still pretty young, so it would not be a surprise if he is still on the Reds’ radar, but it remains to be seen if he is near the top of the Merseyside club’s list of summer transfer targets.

Which other midfielders are Liverpool interested in signing?

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is said to be an option, although he is a very different type of player to Varela. He is known for his line-breaking passes, while the Porto star is more about breaking up play with his tackling. He has picked up 9 yellow cards and a red this season.

Varela’s teammate Victor Froholdt has also been linked in recent weeks, while the likes of Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and RB Leipzig’s Assan Ouedraogo are other names who have been suggested as potential targets.
