Anthony Gordon’s first words in Barcelona as £70m Newcastle United exit imminent

Anthony Gordon has landed in Barcelona and is currently undergoing his medical ahead of an anticipated Newcastle United exit.

Anthony Gordon told reporters he is “very happy” after landing in Barcelona to secure his £70million transfer.

Newcastle United agreed to a deal worth £70million plus add-ons yesterday, with the winger jetting off to Catalonia this morning. Gordon will undergo a medical before officially becoming a Barca player.

The 25-year-old has not featured for the Magpies since being subbed in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on April 12. Eddie Howe kept Gordon on the sidelines for Newcastle’s remaining six fixtures as it became clear he wanted to leave.

Anthony Gordon’s first words

Gordon flew via private jet from Newcastle airport this morning ahead of his Barcelona medical. It is understood that the wideman left the Magpies amicably and not under a cloud - unlike Isak.

As he landed in Spain, a group of reporters were on standby, ready to catch a glimpse of the big-money arrival. His first words to the baying press pack were “I’m very happy” as he made his way through Barcelona–El Prat Airport.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon

Howe reiterated several times that Gordon's omission was due to Newcastle having one eye on the future. In his final press conference of the season, the Toon boss skirted around the idea of the England international leaving.

“It’s a difficult one for me to comment on in terms of how he should be remembered, because that's us almost saying that he is going…and there's no guarantee,” Howe said. “We don't know at this moment whether it will be his last game. Obviously, I've picked a team, as I've said many times, that in the last few weeks that's been performing well.

“Anthony's come back from injury. He's been great around the group. He's been absolutely part of the team, so there's been no issues. Let's see what happens. The right time to give an answer to that question would be if he does leave, and then I'll obviously discuss that with you.”
