Liverpool fans have been left bemused amid claims from the Premier League that Bruno Fernandes may have just completed the “best of all time” season.
Fernandes claimed the league’s Playmaker award and broke the record for the most assists in a single Premier League season, with his tally of 21 seeing him better the previous best, which was jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The Manchester United captain has also been named the Football Writers Association’s Player of the Year, as well as taking the same accolade from the Premier League itself, which has led to the controversial social media post in question.
The Premier League posed the question: “Is Bruno Fernandes’ 2025/26 season the best of all time?”, causing fans of rival clubs to respond in their droves.
Liverpool supporters were among those, with many insisting that Mohamed Salah’s previous season was far superior.
The Egyptian, who is leaving the Reds this summer, recorded a combined 47 goal contributions during Liverpool’s title triumph in 2024/25, scoring 29 goals and adding 18 assists.

In comparison, Fernandes only scored nine league goals, taking his total tally to 30 goal contributions, leaving him a long way off Salah. What’s more, Liverpool’s former winger claimed all the major player of the year accolades, as well as winning both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards.
“Salah got 46 goal contributions in the PL last season not 30 years ago, so how have ye forgotten that already,” one fan remarked.
“Imagine comparing a 9/21 GA season to a 29/18 one,” another said.
“Madness to even ask this question,” one supporter wrote, while another simply responded: “No.”

Liverpool.com says: This truly is one of the strangest questions ever asked. Fernandes has had a great season, and he deserves his awards, but to suggest that this might be the greatest season ever by a player is ludicrous.
As so many have pointed out, Salah’s campaign last year was far superior, and it resulted in Liverpool winning the league - far more than Fernandes and United can claim.
And that’s only the start. Fernandes’ total goal contributions pales in comparison to so many other seasons, with Luis Suarez, Erling Haaland and Thierry Henry posting far more impressive seasons.

And as much as Fernandes deserves to be named Player of the Year, even that accolade could be debated. There will be plenty of Arsenal fans feeling as though one of their players should have been recognized more.
