Anthony Gordon warned Gary Neville about leaving Newcastle United - Barcelona move not…

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is set to join Barcelona in the coming days.

Anthony Gordon made no secret of his desire to compete at the highest level in professional football.

And he will certainly get the chance to do that after Newcastle United agreed a £70million deal with Barcelona on Thursday. Gordon is currently in Catalonia completing the final formalities of a move that should be completed within days.

He is set to become the second high-profile star - after Alexander Isak - to bail the Saudi-backed project. Toon chiefs always wanted to resolve Gordon’s situation before the upcoming World Cup.

Anthony Gordon hint in 2024

In truth, few Newcastle fans have bemoaned his imminent exit on social media. This is a far cry from the outrage and vitriol that made the Isak situation the bitterest saga of last summer.

Gordon scored just three Premier League goals from open play from January 2025 to the end of the recent campaign. His finest form for the Magpies came in 2023-24, with the winger registering 28 goal contributions to be crowned the club’s player of the season.

At the height of this run, Gordon sat down with Manchester United legend Gary Neville. While revisiting his comments, it should come as no surprise that the 25-year-old is now seeking pastures new.

“I want to win trophies, first and foremost,” Gordon said. “I think that’s everyone’s dream. That goes without saying but, individually, I want to be at the very top.

“Whatever that looks like, I probably couldn’t tell you right now. But I think that comes with winning trophies, constantly scoring, constantly assisting and running the way I do. Running is a massive part. Usually, if I run a lot, I play well.”

David Hopkinson always open to sale

In March, Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson publicly vowed there will never be another “Isak-like scenario” on Tyneside. He told reporters: “We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer.

“But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club. Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well.”

While accepting the Magpies must “sell well”, Hopkinson refused to be drawn on specific names. At the time, speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali was more prevalent than Gordon.

“We are not ready to answer that,” Hopkinson responded when asked which players will leave. “We have got to see what set-up we are in and what opportunities present themselves in the marketplace. What I will say is that we intend to be disciplined, active, thoughtful and as proactive as we possibly can.”
