A disappointing campaign at St. James' Park has left Eddie Howe facing a daunting challenge this summer. The Magpies must undergo a thorough inquest after finishing 12th in the Premier League, representing the club's poorest showing in five years.

Missing out on European football for next season will inevitably mean sacrifices must be made in the summer. And it seems probable that at least one of Howe's most prized assets will be offloaded in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Anthony Gordon's heir arrives

The first major transfer news coming out of St James' Park is that Anthony Gordon is destined for Barcelona. A £69.8million transfer has apparently been sealed before the window has even opened, with Gordon poised to sign a £300,000-a-week contract at the Camp Nou.

The agreement takes considerable pressure off Newcastle to sell, especially given its impact on their PSR obligations. Nevertheless, the next significant challenge will be finding a replacement for Gordon's attacking contribution, having been such a pivotal figure, particularly in Europe this season.

At 29, Bowen is marginally older than the Magpies might ideally want in an attacking signing. However, his ability to operate across the front line, combined with the fact West Ham's relegation could make him a relative bargain, may prove too tempting an opportunity to pass up.

Savinho, 22, lacks the same attacking versatility as Bowen and would represent a more like-for-like heir for Gordon. City could potentially be receptive to a loan arrangement, affording Newcastle greater breathing space before committing to Gordon's long-term replacement.

Prioritise goalkeeper and right-back

At the back, it is understood signing a new goalkeeper, potentially two, and a right-back are Eddie Howe's primary targets this summer. Defenders Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth are both due to depart when their deals run out in June, with the same applying to keepers Aaron Ramsdale (loan), John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie.

The Barcelona academy graduate, whose contract is due to expire, has shone across the defensive line for Celta and has even attracted interest from Arsenal recently. Aston Villa are also believed to be monitoring his situation closely, and it's feasible Mingueza could emerge as one of the summer's best-value signings.

Move for Monaco's midfield gem

One name generating significant buzz around Newcastle is that of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara. The 22-year-old has impressed despite a turbulent season for the French outfit, who may themselves be facing an overhaul after finishing seventh in Ligue 1 and scraping into the UEFA Conference League.

Luke Entwistle of Get French Football News told Chronicle Live French clubs are eyeing the Premier League as their strongest opportunity to maximise transfer fees. And with Monaco needing to raise capital, Camara looks very much attainable as a fresh addition in the middle of the park.

It's anticipated the Senegal international would cost Newcastle a minimum of around £45m. However, that's simply the price of landing one of Europe's most exciting rising talents.

Monaco have consistently produced world-class players over the past decade and beyond. The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Youri Tielemans, James Rodriguez and others have each honed their craft at the Stade Louis II before departing for substantial fees.

The urgency for midfield reinforcements this summer will intensify further should Sandro Tonali depart in the coming months. The Italian remains a firm favourite at St. James' but has been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City ahead of the summer window.
