Ibrahima Konate could leave a big question over his Liverpool contract talks unanswered this summer, having recently hinted at a bombshell confession to the club’s sporting director.

The defender looks to be on the verge of leaving Anfield, with reports late on Thursday claiming that talks over a new contract had broken down.

Just last month, Konate had indicated that he was close to signing a new contract with the Reds, but he could now be set for a remarkable U-turn, with rumors already linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain as he’s set to become a free agent next month.

Should Konate leave, it will not be a good look for Liverpool, especially after those comments following the Merseyside derby in April.

During his conversation with reporters, Konate teased that the club’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, would be able to disclose a major revelation the defender made privately earlier in the season.

“I’m waiting to sort the contract, but when everything is sorted, you will have to ask Richard what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet,” Konate said at the time.

"When everything's going to be sorted, I wish you had a discussion with Richard and asked what I said to him a few months ago, before everyone talked about everything.

"When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that."

With Konate seemingly on his way out of Liverpool now though, it’s increasingly unlikely we’ll get to hear what the 27-year-old told Hughes, unless he reveals it himself.

Konate’s departure could seriously disrupt the Reds’ summer transfer plans now, with Hughes and head coach Arne Slot already facing plenty of work after such a poor season.

Jeremy Jacquet is set to bolster the options at center-back as he completes his move from Rennes, but with just 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez acting as backup to him and Virgil van Dijk, who only has a year remaining on his contract, Liverpool may have to find another option during the window.

Liverpool.com says: Konate has really put the pressure on Hughes with those comments. It’s not going to be a good look now if, as seems to be the case, the defender leaves as a free agent.

This is exactly what Liverpool didn’t need right now after this season, with two legends leaving in Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. The pressure will really be on the club to get things right this summer.
