Enzo Fernandez has gone back on what he said about Frank Lampard at Chelsea

A lot of similarities have been drawn between Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard this season, and it is easy to understand why.

Lampard may just be the greatest goalscoring midfielder in history, and Fernandez’s playing style has really reflected that of the Chelsea icon’s lately.

The 25-year-old was the Blues’ second-highest scorer this term, netting 15 times in all competitions. Only Joao Pedro bagged more goals after converting on 20 occasions.

Who would you like to see replace Enzo Fernandez if he leaves Chelsea this summer?

Unfortunately for Chelsea, though, it now looks like they could go into next season without Fernandez.

Enzo Fernandez claimed he wanted to emulate Frank Lampard at Chelsea

It is being widely reported that Fernandez wants to leave Chelsea this summer, which is disappointing. After all, this is someone who said only a few months ago that he wanted to follow in Lampard’s footsteps.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the Argentine said: “He was an exceptional player and a legend here for Chelsea. I don’t like to be compared to him, because he has achieved a lot more here than I have. He’s an idol. I hope to follow in his footsteps at Chelsea.”

Lampard spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge, helping Chelsea to win three Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy.

It is a legacy that Fernandez will probably not get the chance to match, with the Argentina international now looking to leave west London, three years after arriving.

In terms of potential destinations, he could end up moving to Real Madrid. However, for now, Real Madrid are unwilling to meet Fernandez’s price tag.

How Enzo Fernandez’s best ever season at Chelsea compares to Frank Lampard’s

The 2025/26 campaign was Fernandez’s most productive in a Chelsea shirt. On top of the 15 goals he scored, the World Cup winner also managed to record seven assists. He played 54 games in total.

The above is nothing compared to Lampard’s best season at Stamford Bridge, though. In 2009/10, the Coventry City manager scored an incredible 27 goals for Chelsea across all competitions. He also recorded 18 assists.

Fernandez is an amazing player and it will be sad to see him go. But the former Benfica man will never get to that level, few midfielders have.
