Talks held: Arsenal chiefs could see £69m bid accepted to sign their next Gyokeres - opinion

105 goals. 11 Champions League goals. 28 assists. Three league titles. Those are Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres' statistics over the past three seasons.

Much has been made of the club's £63.5m signing from Sporting last summer, mostly due to a slow start to life at The Emirates, but he just won the Premier League in his first season.

Whilst he may not be the most aesthetically pleasing footballer to watch, the Sweden international is effective and his trophy haul and goal record in recent years reflects that.

Gyokeres-Arsenal

Gyokeres has scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Gunners this term, after no player in the squad managed more than 15 goals in the 2024/25 campaign, and will be hoping to add to that tally in the Champions League final.

The Swedish star may lead the line for Mikel Arteta's side in the final of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, hoping to clinch a double.

Arsenal enquire about deal for Liga Portugal star

Gyokeres has undoubtedly been a huge success at The Emirates, because of his goals and at least one major trophy, after joining from the Portuguese league.

Now, the Gunners are looking to repeat that masterstroke by moving for another player who has caught the eye with his performances in Portugal.

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal are one of a number of clubs in the race to sign Porto forward William Gomes in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Gunners, Newcastle United, Roma, and Manchester United have already made contact to hold talks about what a deal could look like for the 20-year-old starlet.

It adds that Porto want to keep Gomes, who is also being pursued by Atletico Madrid as they prepare for the possibility of life after Arsenal target Julian Alvarez, for another season.

That means that any of the interested clubs will need to bid €80m (£69m) to see an offer accepted for the Brazilian youngster, as that is his release clause and it remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal's chiefs are willing to stump up that much for him.

How William Gomes can be Arsenal's next Viktor Gyokeres

After seeing how well Gyokeres did after coming over from Portugal, Arsenal could swiftly sign their next version of him by completing a £69m deal for Gomes in the coming weeks.

The 20-year-old star may not be an experienced player like the former Coventry number nine, but he has just won a league title with Porto and shown real promise in his performances on the pitch.

Gomes, given his young age, played a rotation role for the Portuguese giants in the 2025/26 campaign, as he started nine of his 28 appearances in the league.

Despite only starting nine games, he scored more league goals than Leandro Trossard (six), Bukayo Saka (seven), Noni Madueke (three), and Gabriel Martinelli (one) managed in the Premier League.

In fact, only Gyokeres (14) scored more than seven goals in the league for the Gunners this term, which suggests that Gomes could add a useful goal threat to Arteta's squad from a wide position.

His goalscoring quality was also on display in the Europa League this term, as the Porto starlet scored four goals from 3.03 xG in seven starts in the competition.

The Brazilian magician can play wide on the left or the right side, as a left-footed player, and could be a versatile option for the Spanish head coach, as well as someone who could provide instant quality as a scorer and a creator of goals.

Gomes seems to have the attributes required to have an instant impact for the Gunners out wide, even if that is not as a guaranteed starter, which is why he could be a Gyokeres repeat as another fantastic signing from the Portuguese league.

Unlike Gyokeres, who turns 29 next month, the Brazilian would also be a brilliant long-term signing for Arsenal because he is only 20 and has much more to learn and to develop as a player.

Arteta could coach him to become even better and help him to flourish in England, in the hope that the £69m-rated star eventually becomes a regular starter and game-winner at The Emirates.

The club's chiefs must first, though, make a £69m bid that will be accepted because of his release clause to beat their rivals to his signature before the end of the summer transfer window.
