€65m Striker Deal–Chelsea&Alonso make big transfer decision

Xabi Alonso Chelsea

Nicolas Jackson and Chelsea’s striker dilemma under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are set to welcome Nicolas Jackson back to Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club’s current plan being to give the Senegal forward the opportunity to prove himself under incoming head coach Xabi Alonso, per the Daily Mail. Jackson had established himself as a regular starter for Chelsea after arriving from Villarreal in a £32 million move, scoring 30 goals in 81 appearances across two seasons. His departure on loan to Bayern Munich last season stemmed from a fractured relationship with former head coach Enzo Maresca, rather than any lack of ability.

During his spell in Germany, Jackson scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for Bayern, largely operating as backup to Harry Kane. With Maresca now gone, the door has reopened. Alonso will officially start work at Stamford Bridge on July 1, tasked with the job of earning the Blues a return to Europe as a bare minimum. Jackson will initially be away representing Senegal at the World Cup, which begins on June 11.

Chelsea have quoted potential suitors £80 million should they wish to prize him away from Stamford Bridge, with Newcastle United among those making preliminary contact. Jackson is open to staying at Chelsea but wants assurances that he will be considered a first-choice option under Alonso rather than a rotational player.

What does the right decision look like for Nicolas Jackson and Alonso?

Retaining Nicolas Jackson looks like the sensible call, and the reasoning is fairly straightforward. Liam Delap endured a disastrous campaign after arriving from Ipswich Town last summer, scoring just one Premier League goal all season and looking nothing like a Chelsea player. Joao Pedro drifts into the channels and functions far more effectively as a number ten. Jackson, by contrast, stretches defences, times his runs well and works effectively alongside a creative partner.

His connection with Cole Palmer in particular was genuinely productive. Alonso demands intelligent movement and positional discipline from his attackers. Jackson’s profile fits those demands better than either alternative currently available. Selling him for less than his true worth, purely because the squad has grown crowded, would be poor business from a club that have spent lavishly and still missed Europe.

The better course is straightforward: give Jackson consistent playing time, let him rebuild his confidence under a manager who genuinely rates him, and reassess in January if things do not progress. A footballer of his age and contract length, under the right management, has every reason to flourish again.
