Liverpool are considering a move to bring back a former player as a potential replacement for French defender Ibrahima Konate.
Ibrahima Konate is reportedly set to leave Liverpool as a free agent when his contract expires in June. Despite long-term discussions with the club, Konate couldn't reach an agreement with the club over his value and wages.
Negotiations for a new deal appeared to be on the right track when Konate himself claimed there was a 'big chance' that he'd stay at the club beyond the season. But an agreement was never reached.
Konate is set to become the third player to leave the Anfield club this summer after Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Despite having Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, 2025 signing Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremy Jacquet on their books, Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing another centre-back.
According to TEAMTalk, the Reds have reportedly held talks to bring Jarell Quansah back to the club in the summer. The English defender, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen last summer on a five-year deal for an initial fee of £30 million, with an additional £5 million in add-ons, has reportedly impressed the Anfield staff in his one year away from the side.
Reports claim the Reds are still monitoring Quansah's progress and have held internal discussions about bringing him back to the club. Quansah, who has been selected in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has had a stellar season with his club. The centre-back has made 44 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen this season, scoring five goals.
According to reports, the Reds have a buy-back clause for Quansah. If they want to sign him this summer, they have to pay €80 million (£69.2m). If they wait until 2027, the fee will drop to €65 million (£56.2m).
Jarell Quansah explained his decision to leave Liverpool
Earlier in the year, in an interview with Sky Sports, Quansah explained why he decided to leave the Reds. He claimed that the lack of game time and the project from Leverkusen convinced him to switch to the Bundesliga club. He said:
"I really took time on the decision, I took time to myself to reflect on everything that was going on at Liverpool, everything I thought I could've done better and what was best for my career really, that was it.
"When the Leverkusen guys came in and, like I say, I saw everything that they wanted - I think, from that moment, I knew it was the right decision."
