There has been a ton of talk about the players Xabi Alonso could try to sign as Chelsea manager. But it might be equally interesting to see what he thinks of the players available to him. Let’s not forget, the Blues will have to work under financial constraints this summer. They have no Champions League football coming up and have not had a steady front-of-shirt sponsor for years.
Earlier, it emerged that Real Madrid are now bringing in more than €1.2 billion in annual revenue. Chelsea are nowhere near that at the moment but are still expected to compete with those clubs at the top of the game. So, they might need to get creative.
It remains to be seen if some forgotten players can revive their Chelsea careers under Alonso. One potential candidate could be Tyrique George, who is out on loan at Everton. But his future remains uncertain.
According to Sripad, there have been no talks between George and Alonso. Everton still have the option to buy, and that clause is active until the end of June or whenever they make the announcement of the winger’s return to Chelsea. The figure stands at £25 million, but the Merseyside club are trying to negotiate a lower fee. If they don’t sign him, he’ll be at Cobham for pre-season, like others. There is no guarantee of anything right now.
Will Tyrique George continue at Everton or return to Chelsea?
To be very honest, it is hard to see Everton spending close to £25 million to sign George. He simply has not done enough since joining the club.
George has made just one start in the Premier League this season. That should tell you everything that you need to know about his current standing in the Everton squad.
Considering the circumstances, it is remarkable that Everton actually seem open to continuing with George. Now, it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached between all parties.
George decision should come from Alonso
George has largely become a forgotten man at Chelsea. And he has barely featured since joining Everton. So, it is very realistic that he ends up returning to Stamford Bridge.
Does his long-term future lie at Chelsea or somewhere else? We do not know. The youngster does have a ton of talent but he simply has not gotten the consistent chances required to put it together yet.
Obviously, a lot will depend on how Alonso views George and his role at the club. If the Spaniard wants him, then Chelsea should do everything possible to keep him. But then, it might come down to Everton’s plans as well.
