What Chelsea and Xabi Alonso truly expect to happen with Enzo Fernandez

Xabi Alonso’s new era hasn’t even officially begun, but a massive dark cloud has formed over Chelsea with speculation mounting over Enzo Fernandez.

Enzo Fernandez has thrown Chelsea‘s summer planning into absolute disarray after informing the club he wants to leave Stamford Bridge.

Rumors of a dramatic exit have naturally intensified with the incoming Manchester City manager, Enzo Maresca, who forged a fantastic working relationship with him at Stamford Bridge. However, despite Maresca’s immense appreciation, City are currently prioritizing other midfield targets, allowing Real Madrid to emerge as Fernandez’s preferred destination.

Xabi Alonso desperately wants to keep the 25-year-old for his new project, but the player’s camp is already sounding out alternatives.

Enzo Fernandez expected to report back for Chelsea pre-season

ESPN are reporting that Chelsea expects Fernandez to report for preseason training following the World Cup, but speculation is mounting that he could formally ask to leave the club.

It’s stated that any interested clubs would be expected to surpass the £107m ($144m) fee which Chelsea paid Benfica for Fernandez in February 2023.

Real Madrid are interested in Fernandez, but the asking price is an obstacle; meanwhile, Manchester City are also thought to be tracking the situation.

At this stage, it may just take a miracle for him to stay, despite reports.

Xabi Alonso needs the Enzo Fernandez money

While Xabi Alonso wants to keep Enzo Fernandez, pocketing a staggering £120 million from his sale could drastically accelerate Chelsea’s much-needed summer rebuild.

Following a disastrous tenth-place finish, the Blues’ squad requires surgery across multiple positions, particularly out wide and in defense.

Plus, the massive windfall from the wantaway midfielder would provide Alonso with immediate, immense financial muscle under Profit and Sustainability rules.

Instead of being handcuffed by tight margins, Alonso could instantly fund a world-class centre-back, especially after seeing the links to Ibrahima Konate.
