The Slot Era Is Over — What Happens Next for Liverpool?

Liverpool have reportedly parted ways with Arne Slot with immediate effect following the club’s end-of-season review. Multiple outlets are now reporting that Liverpool and Slot have agreed to go their separate ways, with the search for a new head coach already underway.

And honestly, while the timing may surprise some people, the decision itself probably won’t.

When Slot arrived, he inherited one of the strongest squads in Europe.

He also inherited enormous goodwill from supporters following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

His first season brought success, but Liverpool’s dramatic collapse during the 2025/26 campaign ultimately proved impossible to ignore.

The warning signs were everywhere.

Liverpool looked:

* Disorganised defensively

* Vulnerable physically

* Lacking leadership

* Short of confidence

* And increasingly disconnected from supporters

By the end of the season, many fans felt the team had completely lost its identity.

Perhaps the most worrying aspect was that things never appeared to improve.

Liverpool’s form deteriorated badly over the closing months of the campaign, with disappointing results becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Supporters could tolerate a difficult season.

What they struggled to accept was the lack of visible progress.

The bigger concern now is what comes next.

Liverpool are already dealing with:

* Mohamed Salah’s departure

* Andy Robertson’s exit

* Ibrahima Konaté uncertainty

* Questions over Alisson Becker’s future

* Major squad rebuilding requirements

Now they must add finding a new manager to that list.

Reports have already linked Andoni Iraola as a leading candidate, with his high-energy, aggressive style appealing to many supporters.

If Liverpool go down that route, it would signal a desire to restore the intensity and urgency that many fans feel disappeared under Slot.

Ultimately, Slot will leave with mixed reviews.

Some supporters will remember the success he achieved.

Others will remember a season that unravelled alarmingly fast.

But what nobody can argue with is this:

Liverpool’s hierarchy have made a huge decision.

And now the pressure shifts firmly onto Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards and the club’s owners to prove they have a clear plan for what comes next.

Because after one of the most turbulent seasons in recent memory, Liverpool cannot afford to get the next appointment wrong.
