Liverpool sack Arne Slot after 20-defeat season, Andoni Iraola favourite to replace him

Liverpool endured a terrible campaign, leading to scrutiny over the position of manager Arne Slot.

They nearly missed out on Champions League qualification, having finished fifth in the standings, finishing below Aston Villa and arch rivals Manchester United.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano now reports that Liverpool have decided to sack Slot. Andoni Iraola is the favourite to replace the Dutchman.

Iraola has left Bournemouth after guiding the south coast side to their first European qualification. He has also been linked with Crystal Palace and AC Milan.

Why Liverpool are right to sack Slot

Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, erasing the dark clouds that surrounded the club after the exit of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

Mohamed Salah arguably enjoyed his best season under him, with the Egyptian winning the Premier League Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards.

He also brought the best out of Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate, while several other players benefited from his arrival.

However, he failed to replicate the same this season, despite Liverpool spending heavily last summer, signing players such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

The Reds broke several unwanted records this season, including their highest number of defeats (20) in a season across all competitions this century.

He also fell out with Salah, who is now set to leave the club as a free agent, while several key players suffered a huge dip in form.
