Arne Slot's time in charge of Liverpool is over and, in truth, the club had little choice but to remove him as head coach - but his last season shouldn't be the overriding memory of his time in charge

And with that, the Arne Slot era is over.
Just two years ago, Jurgen Klopp was belting out his name as he heralded his successor. Twelve months ago, Slot was lifting the Premier League trophy in front of the Kop, with supporters in dreamland.
Now, his reign is over. As shocking as the timing of Liverpool’s ruthless decision is - the club had been resolutely sticking by the Dutchman right up until the end of the season - it also makes perfect sense. In truth, once the Anfield crowd had started jumping on his back, there was no other way the club could go.
The boos that have emanated from the stands this season told their own story. As Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and others like to remind us, Liverpool fans hold the manager up like no other, so if their patience has run out, the outcome is inevitable.
And there were signs that the players had lost faith. Only they will know what they truly meant in supporting Mohamed Salah’s statement just a couple of weeks ago, but the writing may well have been on the wall from that moment.
This is the right call for Liverpool. This is the right call for Slot, who cut a lonely figure after the final game of the season.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
But even after all of the calls for him to go, the overriding feeling upon the announcement of his exit is one of sadness.
As dire as the 2025/26 season was, it can’t be forgotten what Slot brought to Liverpool fans. For 30 years, those supporters had been waiting to be crowned league champions, and when the moment finally arrived, they couldn’t celebrate it with their team.
Legends of the club didn’t get the chance to bask in the glory that should have been afforded to them. Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and, yes, Jurgen Klopp, among others, were never able to lift the coveted Premier League trophy in front of the fans.

Arne Slot should be remembered for delivering the Premier League title for Liverpool
Slot though brought that moment that so many had craved. Players like Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold finally got the moment their careers deserved.

The feeling that win over Tottenham brought to confirm the Reds as champions, and the trophy lift on the pitch at Anfield - those should be the overriding memories of Slot’s time at Liverpool.
