After rumours and counter rumours around the future of the former Feyenoord manager, it was widely expected that Arne Slot would be given another season in the Anfield dugout.

This morning’s news has blown that theory out of the water.

And the BBC are now providing a more in-depth look into why and how the Liverpool hierarchy decided to part ways with Arne Slot.

Firstly, the BBC report that the news of the sacking came as a shock to Arne Slot as his contract was not due to expire until next summer.

Even up until yesterday, Arne Slot and his representatives believed that there would be no change in his status as Liverpool head coach.

The national broadcaster reports that the decision to sack him was made by sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, chief executive of owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

The report states that Liverpool’s hierarchy believe the club’s next phase requires a more front-footed, aggressive and urgent style of football, and that Slot is not the ideal candidate to deliver it.

Another factor cited in the report was the continued comparison with Jurgen Klopp, whose influence at Anfield remains significant despite his departure.

One club source, who was also at Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure told the BBC, “Arne’s a great person but you always felt he lacked that authority Jurgen had and that became more evident when things weren’t going well on the pitch”.

With all that said, the understanding is that FSG initially backed Slot next season to rebuild the supporter confidence, which declined during the team’s struggles on the pitch this season.

But, as the 2025/26 season concluded, they believed that delaying the decision would be unfair on the squad and damaging for next season.

The BBC further state that this was a decision made with enormous reluctance.

On Arne Slot’s behalf, the broadcaster states there is no bad blood with Liverpool Football Club but the Dutchman is of the belief that he has been dealt a tough card with the situation this past season.

Ultimately, the report suggests Liverpool’s decision was driven by a belief that the club requires a different figure to lead its next chapter, with the search for Slot’s successor now set to begin.
