"Liverpool decided": Journalist names the reason Liverpool sacked Arne Slot

Liverpool announced on their official platforms today that they have parted ways with Dutch coach Arne Slot, signalling the start of a new era at Anfield.

Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024 and won the Premier League in his first season in charge, equalling Manchester United’s previously held record of 20 league titles in England’s top flight.

The former Feyenoord coach will now himself be replaced, with many reports suggesting Andoni Iraola is the next man to inhabit the Anfield dugout.

So, why did FSG and Liverpool decide to part ways with Slot?

Liverpool make decision over passive Slot-ball to usher in intense, aggressive Iraola philosophy

In many ways, this executive decision could be painted as a return to the Klopp-era of high pressing and aggressive attacking football that has been lacking under Slot’s side since March 2025.

According to Ben Jacobs, Liverpool aim to reintroduce the heavy-metal football that Klopp made popular at Anfield, which feels much more like ‘The Liverpool Way.’

Jacobs reports: “The aim is to establish a more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football. Liverpool decided to move swiftly so as not to overshadow pre-season.

“The decision to appoint a successor is underway with Andoni Iraola a leading contenders. The primary objective is to recruit the candidate who best fits the preferred playing style criteria.

“There are also likely to be further changes to the coaching staff.”

Slot should hold his head high: He made Liverpool history and helped heal a broken team

While it’s inarguable that Slot failed in certain areas, there is no denying the impact he has had on Liverpool. Not only did he win a league title, but many journalists have commented on how impeccably human his handling of Diogo Jota’s passing was. There is no blueprint for a manager to follow when a beloved member of the team or staff passes away.

While the 2025-26 season may have always been doomed due to the way grief shapes people. Reason and logic go out the door when humans process grief, but Slot can be proud of the way he made allowances in pre-season for his players and coaching staff to mourn.

This was a process that couldn’t be rushed, but Slot will always have my gratitude for treating his squad as a group of players rather than the way the broader British press painted them as nothing more than millionaire athletes failing to ‘earn‘ their keep.

Farewell, Arne. You Will Never Walk Alone.
