On a heartbreaking day in Hungary, Arsenal watched Champions League glory slip through its fingers as Paris Saint-Germain stumbled its way to consecutive European success.

A penalty shoot-out was required to divide Europe's two finest teams. PSG ultimately prevailed after Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes failed to convert from the spot.

Eager to build upon their Premier League title triumph by creating history in Budapest, the Gunners — particularly Kai Havertz — required merely six minutes to pierce PSG hearts. A deflected clearance dropped into the German's path, and he surged forward before unleashing an unstoppable effort past Matvey Safonov at his near post from a tight angle.

PSG reacted predictably, controlling possession for lengthy periods.

However, Arsenal's tactical approach appeared flawless as the side, orchestrated by the outstanding Gabriel, repelled any prolonged attacking moves to preserve their slender advantage at the interval.

The final pivoted on the hour mark: Cristhian Mosquera was adjudged to have fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area, and Ousmane Dembele converted confidently from the spot.

David Raya miraculously denied Bradley Barcola's route to goal in the closing five minutes as both teams hunted the strike that would crown them European champions, only to settle for additional opportunities in extra time.

Arsenal's frustration boiled over as the referee dismissed a Noni Madueke penalty appeal in extra time.

Yet it was spot-kicks that ultimately decided the game — and PSG was once again crowned the Champions League winner.

"A cruel, cruel moment and a cruel blow for Gabriel, who has been a tower of strength for Arsenal," said former Arsenal defender Matt Upson on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Speaking on TNT Sports, former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said: "It will take a while to get over, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to take another 20 years to get to another final with Mikel in charge.

"I fancied us (Arsenal) for penalties, but it's a hard one to take."

Owen Hargreaves also covered the game for TNT Sports. He added: "What a journey this team (Arsenal) has taken their fans on.

"The best in the Premier League, one of the best in Europe. Arsenal are here to stay; they will go again."
