Paris Saint-Germain beat Arsenal on penalties to secure consecutive Champions League titles

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following their 1-1 draw after extra time in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday.

The Gunners started on the strong foot as Kai Havertz opened the scoring six minutes into the game after he picked up a loose ball and finished into the roof of the net.

In the 19th minute, PSG appealed for a penalty after Bukayo Saka appeared to have handled the ball in the area, but after VAR review, nothing was given.

Les Parisiens mustered their first attempt in the 43rd minute as Fabian Ruiz headed wide from Nuno Mendes’ cross.

In the first-half stoppage time, Havertz could’ve doubled the Gunners’ lead, but Marquinhos made a crucial block to deny him.

Moments later, PSG registered their first shot on goal as Ruiz unleashed a volley, but it was comfortably dealt with by David Raya.

Five minutes after the restart, PSG threatened first, but Achraf Hakimi was denied by Raya.

Les Parisiens were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia went down in the area under the challenge of Christian Mosquera.

Ousmane Dembele stepped up for the spot-kick and sent Raya the wrong way.

Moments later, the Frenchman squandered a golden opportunity to give PSG the lead after capitalizing on Raya’s misplaced pass, only to send his effort wide of the target before Kvaratskhelia rattled the woodwork shortly afterwards.

Bradley Barcola came agonizingly close to winning it in regulation time, but his missed chance moments before full-time sent the match into extra time.

Neither side could find the decisive breakthrough during extra time, sending the contest to a penalty shootout.

PSG triumphed 4-3 in the penalty shootout, with Gabriel Magalhães failing to convert Arsenal’s decisive spot-kick as the French champions successfully retained the Champions League crown.
