Florian Wirtz to Chelsea? Liverpool slam the door shut on Alonso’s pursuit

Florian Wirtz to Chelsea: Liverpool will not sell Florian Wirtz to Chelsea this summer, sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk, despite growing interest from incoming Blues manager Xabi Alonso. FSG spent £116 million securing the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, and the club have no intention of letting him leave after just one season.

Wirtz endured a difficult opening campaign at Anfield, drawing heavy criticism for failing to justify his price tag under Arne Slot‘s system. However, the 23-year-old steadily improved and concluded the 2025/26 season with seven goals and 10 assists across 49 appearances. That late-season upturn mattered enormously inside the club.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that Liverpool are not moving on from Wirtz, with sources inside Anfield pointing to how he finished the campaign as a genuine positive. Bailey emphasised that even approaches from Bayern Munich or Alonso’s Chelsea would be flatly rejected, with Liverpool insisting they have not received any formal communication from interested parties. Bailey’s conclusion was unambiguous, stating that Wirtz is at Liverpool to stay.

Florian Wirtz to Chelsea: Why is Alonso pushing hard?

Alonso knows Wirtz exceptionally well, having developed him into one of Europe’s finest attacking midfielders during their time together at Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz recorded 18 goals and 20 assists across 49 games in the historic 2023/24 Bundesliga title-winning campaign, earning the Bundesliga Player of the Year award along the way. Alonso officially takes charge at Stamford Bridge on 1 July 2026, signing a four-year contract, and faces a major overhaul after Chelsea failed to qualify for European football. Reuniting with his former prodigy would fast-track that rebuild considerably.

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey remains confident that Wirtz will fulfil his enormous potential at Anfield. Speaking to Hajper, Heskey suggested the German could eventually surpass Bruno Fernandes’ assists record in a single Premier League season, adding that Liverpool need to adjust their style of play to get the best from him.

Florian Wirtz to Chelsea: the right call from Liverpool?

This is absolutely the right decision from Liverpool, and there is no credible argument against it. Selling a 23-year-old to a direct Premier League rival after one adaptation season, having invested £116 million, would be commercially reckless and tactically senseless. 17 goal contributions in a debut season is a respectable return for a player still finding his feet in English football, regardless of the noise surrounding his struggles.

For Xabi Alonso and Chelsea, this represents a real setback. He needed a player he already trusts to lead his attacking structure at a club rebuilding from the ground up. Chelsea missed European football entirely in 2025/26 and sacked two managers before Alonso’s arrival, meaning the squad needs significant quality injected quickly. Losing the Wirtz pursuit forces him to find that quality elsewhere, and alternatives of that calibre rarely come cheap or easy in one window.

Liverpool hold the stronger hand here, and they clearly know it.
