The secret is out – Arne Slot has been sacked by Liverpool after just two seasons at the club, following a deeply disappointing campaign in which the Reds finished 5th in the Premier League table.
Things are thought to be moving quickly at Anfield. A successor to the Dutchman has already been identified – none other than former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola.
Following a success debut season in the Premier League, which saw Liverpool win the league title, Slot’s sophomore campaign was nothing less than an unmitigated disaster. Despite spending well over £400 million in 2025’s summer transfer window, the Reds showed major signs of regression under Slot’s stewardship.
As such, the heirarchy at Fenway Sports Group decided it was time for a change. Today, we’ll explain why Iraola is a brilliant pick to take on the mantle at Liverpool – starting with his canny exploits in the transfer window.
Eye for talent
Bournemouth’s transfer budget was always modest during Iraola’s reigns, at least when compared with some of the division’s biggest clubs. As such, a shrewd eye was key towards his success.
Following a summer of ostentatious, profligate spending, Liverpool will need to rein in their financial losses this time around. Thankfully, Iraola is no stranger to working with a (relatively) tight budget.
Last season, they signed some excellent talents such as Rayan, Adrien Truffert and Djorde Petrovic, none of whom had a transfer fee that exceeded £30 million.
Going back further, he was also able to snap up Eli Junior Kroupi for a meagre £10 million and Dean Huijsen for £16 million. Now, Kroupi is widely recognised as one of the best young players in the world, while Huijsen was sold to Real Madrid for £50 million (netting them a profit of £34 million) last summer.
Development of young stars
Let’s touch upon a few of the names we’ve just mentioned. Kroupi was not one of the best young players in the world when he joined the Cherries – now, after a year of working with Iraola, he most certainly is.
Furthermore, he also helped to mould Rayan into a top Premier League winger in just a few months. A raw talent upon his arrival at the south coast, Iraola has refined him into an outstanding player who we expect to keep getting better and better.
This would serve him very well at Liverpool – Reds fans are known for their universal support of academy stars. In particular, Rio Ngumoha is very popular within their fanbase – we’ll be very excited to see how Iraola can aid his development into a world-class superstar that we know he can become.
Attractive style of play
Lastly, we must touch upon Bourneouth’s exciting style of play. A front-foot, cavalier outfit, Iraola isn’t frightened to sacrifice defensively solidity in the name of getting his players forward.
Jurgen Klopp often employed this philosophy, albeit in a different manner. As arguably the most popular Liverpool manager since Bob Paisley, playing attacking football will only aid Iraola in the eyes of Reds fans.
Slot’s conservative, safety-first football was largely unpopular at Anfield – if Iraola is given the job, expect this to be swiftly extinguished.
