Chelsea transfer news: Star midfielder edges towards summer exit amid City and Madrid interest

Chelsea transfer news: Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported last week that a potential switch to the Etihad Stadium has become a concrete possibility for the Argentine, with incoming City boss Enzo Maresca described as desperate to sign him. Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, offered a frank assessment of the situation.

He argued that nobody in world football would pay £120 million in cash for the midfielder, calling the reported valuation unrealistic from the outset. Sky Sports News has since confirmed that Manchester City‘s primary focus remains on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, with the club publicly denying any formal interest in the Chelsea captain. Yet Borson stopped well short of ruling out a move entirely.

He suggested a player-plus-cash arrangement could work, noting that inflated player valuations in swap deals tend to close gaps that pure cash negotiations cannot. Chelsea-focused journalist Si Phillips reported that sources indicate the midfielder is set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club willing to sell if they can secure a capital gain and avoid a book loss.

“Not for Man City, sorry. Fernandez is not going for £120million. We all know that. It’s just a silly story and nobody in world football can either afford it or would want to pay £120m for Fernandez,” Borson said.

“That’s the starting point. The second point is, I mean, I think he could easily go to City, particularly if there was some sort of player swap. I think he could go to Real Madrid, also on a player swap deal.

“If they throw a whole load of players in, then the value is fudged to an extent because you can just inflate the value of the players that come in. But nobody’s paying £120m in cash for Fernandez.

“City’s focus is on [Elliot] Anderson, which looks like it’s something that they’re very confident that they will do. Not sure how they’re so confident, given that they don’t know what his fee is, unless there is a release clause, but nobody knows.

“I’m not saying they wouldn’t want Fernandez, I can see a scenario where they would quite like him, but they’re certainly not going to pay £120m.”

Journalist Ben Jacobs added that the player would welcome interest from Real Madrid, while informal contact with Manchester City has already taken place. The situation is complicated further by his long-term contract at Chelsea, which runs until 2032. With Chelsea transfer news dominating the back pages, the pressure on the club to act decisively is growing with each passing week.

Chelsea transfer news and what the club must do next

This is a genuinely difficult situation, and the instinct to hold firm on price is understandable. But Chelsea need to be honest with themselves. The Argentine has openly expressed his desire for Champions League football next season, and Chelsea’s failure to qualify makes that a hard conversation to resolve internally. Selling him to Manchester City, a direct Premier League rival, would sting badly regardless of the fee.

The smarter move is to engage Real Madrid seriously, push for a clean sale above £100 million, and reinvest quickly in a younger replacement. Letting this drag into August serves nobody. Chelsea transfer news will define this window, and a prolonged saga could unsettle their entire squad rebuild under the new management structure.
