The Premier League winning Liverpool gaffer has been dismissed
Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will follow Arne Slot out the door at Liverpool after his dismissal, it’s claimed.
The former Ibrox Barcelona and Arsenal full-back was appointed Slot’s number two at Anfield in July at a Liverpool side who’d just won the Premier League. However, last season, in a far less successful campaign, the Reds ended the season trophy-less and finished fifth in the standings, eventually leading to the manager’s demise. Yesterday, Slot was sacked as Liverpool boss with immediate effect.
The future now remains uncertain for ex Gers hero van Bronckhorst, who oversaw the fairytale run to the Europa League final in 2022 while in the Ibrox dugout and steered the side to a Scottish Cup. He also won five major honours at Rangers a player.
Van Bronckhorst follows Slot at Liverpool
According to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof: “Arne Slot's Dutch assistants (including Sipke Hulshoff and Giovanni van Bronckhorst) and the Belgian Ruben Peeters are also leaving Liverpool with immediate effect. That was announced to the employees of the British top club an hour ago. Axe day at Anfield.”
Van Bronckhorst took over from former Dutch teammate and Everton man John Heitinga as Slot’s number two, when he was appointed Ajax boss. Slot was well aware of the former Rangers boss’ exploits through their mutual connection to Feyenoord. Either side of his Light Blues spell, van Bronckhorst also managed China Super League side Guangzhou and Turkish giants Besiktas.
The Merseyside club are now looking for Slot’s successor, with former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola the favourite to take the reins. The Spaniard helped the Cherries reach European football for the time in their history with a sixth place finish last season.
Why was Slot sacked as Liverpool boss?
The 48-year old had big shoes to fill taking over from legendary boss Jurgen Klopp, who actually recommended him as his successor. After winning the league in his first year, Slot seemingly could do no wrong in the Anfield dugout, however a monumental fall from grace in the league around October time saw them rapidly slide down the table.
A Liverpool statement read: “We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but.
“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title. Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
