Ibrahima Konate tells teammates his summer transfer plans

Ibrahima Konate’s situation at Liverpool has been a confusing one.

On April 19th, after Virgil van Dijk’s dramatic last-minute winner at the first ever Merseyside Derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Konate strolled into the media zone and announced that he expects to remain at the club and that an extension is close to being finalised.

It would bring to an end a lengthy saga that had spanned the length of the season and had meant that Liverpool had avoided another player who could’ve been sold for a hefty fee, to leave for free.

It is now clear that that is not the case.

Despite the news of Arne Slot’s dismissal, Ibrahima Konate is still expected to leave Liverpool on a free this summer after failing to agree on renewed terms.

According to RMCSport, he has even communicated with his France international teammates as they prepare for the World Cup that there will “be no turnaround, he will not extend at the Reds.”

It was the minor details that has ended Ibrahima Konate’s story at Liverpool despite growing to be an important part of the starting eleven across his five-year stint on Merseyside.

Talks over extending the French defender began as far back as November 2023 but gaps between what the player wanted and what the club wanted to offer refused to close.

Liverpool decided to walk away from talks to extend Ibrahima Konate’s stay at the club after failing to reach an agreement and are instead turning their attention to filling the void left by Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike, who will see himself sidelined until at least the new year.

On top of that, the Reds have signed talented young defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni across the last two transfer windows and will allow them to fulfil their potential with consistent chances in the starting eleven.
