The firing of Arne Slot has sent shockwaves throughout Liverpool.

Following a deeply disappointing campaign that saw the Reds limp to a fifth-place finish, Fenway Sports Group concluded that the Dutch manager had taken the club as far as he could, with an official statement released to confirm the news. Slot will forever be associated with delivering the Reds their 20th top-flight title. Yet those glorious sun-soaked scenes at Anfield in May 2025, as jubilant supporters celebrated Liverpool clinching the Premier League, now feel like a distant memory.

A total of 20 defeats across all competitions this season gradually eroded the once-unshakeable confidence fans had placed in Slot, as Anfield shifted from a bastion of strength and solidarity to a cauldron of discontent and frustration.

The latest developments shed light on the reasons behind Slot's exit, while club captain Virgil van Dijk has outlined his expectations for the campaign ahead.

Reasons behind Slot's exit

According to The Athletic, Liverpool opted to end Slot's tenure due to a lack of identity on the pitch.

His departure was further attributed to a significant drop in form from several of the club's more established players, including Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister. The report indicates that, "in the eyes of the owners," Liverpool's performances lacked tempo and intensity.

It also claimed that the Reds had started playing a "dull brand of football" under Slot, which eventually fostered a "mood of negativity at Anfield."

The boos aimed at the manager from the Anfield crowd after they drew with Chelsea earlier this month, coupled with the mounting discontent brewing around the club, left Slot with little room for maneuver.

The report discloses that FSG's chief executive of soccer, Michael Edwards, and sporting director Richard Hughes opted to fire the Premier League-winning manager following an end-of-season review.

Van Dijk's comments

Speaking before Slot's departure from Liverpool, club captain Van Dijk called on the squad to knuckle down and bring back the glory days to Anfield, voicing his belief they will do exactly that.

Slot's successor will no doubt have Van Dijk's words ringing in his ears, fully conscious of the immense task that awaits.

Speaking in the club's latest issue of the 'Walk On' magazine, the Dutch skipper said: "I think it is an opportunity for other players to step up. It is not just an opportunity; it has to happen and it will happen. I'm not worried about that.

"It's just taking responsibility. I think we have plenty of players that have those traits in them. And it's now down to them and down to the manager to make sure it comes out, take their responsibility and enjoy it and embrace it as well because it's an absolute privilege to lead and to feel that responsibility for this football club.

"The players we've got, in my eyes, are great players with a lot of quality. But I've often said that to play for Liverpool, you need more than just quality on the pitch. And that's something you have to grow into. So I expect, especially those players who joined us in the summer, they can make another next step and can be even more important to us."
