Manchester City and player ‘far apart’ on renewal – Entourage acknowledges transfer talks

Real Madrid’s interest in Manchester City‘s Rodri has been a topic in the Spanish media over the past few months.

The Spain international has 13 months left on his contract, and it’s unclear what he plans to do this summer.

In February, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that Real Madrid want to sign the Manchester City star after the World Cup.

A month later, the midfielder refused to discuss where he will play next season.

At that time, when asked about his future, he said: “No, no. I’m not going to answer that. It’s a time to think about what we have now, with my team, about my season, which is quite a lot. Then we’ll see.”

On May 20th, Sport Witness relayed news explaining that he’s been a long-term target for the La Liga giants.

Manchester City star’s entourage responds

Real Madrid have an election on June 7th, fought between current president Florentino Pérez and Enrique Riquelme.

Last week, Riquelme told ESPN that Los Blancos should have a player like Rodri.

“I love that player, he’s a fantastic player and he’s the type of player Real Madrid should have and who should be playing for them,” he said

“But obviously he’s at another club and we have to respect that. Rodri is the type of player who should be playing for Real Madrid.”

Cope’s Tiempo de Juego took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report an update on the 29-year-old from journalist Miguel Ángel Díaz.

He claims the Manchester City star’s entourage have acknowledged holding talks with Riquelme. The presidential candidate aims to have the Manchester City player at Real Madrid if he wins the election.

However, Rodri’s camp insist there’s been no negotiations with the Spanish club over a summer move.

The journalist further adds: “Rodri is 100% focused on the World Cup and is currently in the process of renewing his contract with City, although the two sides are far apart at the moment.”

Manchester City determined to keep Spaniard

The former Atlético star’s contract expires in 2027 and his value, as per Transfermarkt, is €65m.

Three months ago, Sport Witness relayed news of the offer to renew Rodri’s contract.

Manchester City want to tie him down soon, to secure his long-term future and fend off Real Madrid. Without the renewal, the English club could risk losing him to Los Blancos.

More developments are expected, likely after the World Cup.
