Liverpool Eye Surprise Replacement For Konate - He Is 'Cleared To Leave' His Current Team This Summer

Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis is “under consideration” to replace Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool, according to reports.

It emerged earlier this week that the Reds would not be renewing Konate’s contract, with the Frenchman set to depart Anfield after 5 years.

The Merseysiders are now looking at potential centre-back targets and TEAMtalk claim that Koulierakis’s name is on the shortlist.

He is classed as a risky signing due to his lack of pedigree, but he could well be a cost-effective addition to the first-team squad.

What do Liverpool fans need to know about the player?

Koulierakis came through the youth ranks of PAOK Thessaloniki before making his senior debut against Panetolikos in August 2022.

The defender made 73 first-team appearances prior to being snapped up by Wolfsburg for €11.75m in the summer of 2024.

Over the last two campaigns, Koulierakis has been a regular starter at centre-half, but he has played the odd game at left-back due to the fact that he is predominantly left-footed. That ability to play dual roles may have attracted the Reds’ recruitment team, who are also looking to provide cover for Milos Kerkez following Andy Robertson’s departure.

Wolfsburg need to sell Koulierakis

After losing their relegation playoff to Paderborn, Koulierakis’s club will be playing in Germany’s second tier next season, and there will be an exodus of players.

TEAMtalk report that Koulierakis is “cleared to leave” if a team matches his valuation, which is unlikely to be very high.

Considering Liverpool weren’t expected to lose Konate on a free, it isn’t believed that his replacement was factored into the summer’s transfer budget. For that reason, recruiting someone like Koulierakis on the cheap makes sense.

One of the alternatives is thought to be former Red Jarell Quansah, but the buyback clause on the Bayer Leverkusen player is an eyewatering €80m (£69m).
