Ibrahima Konate new club latest: Saudi “proposals”, Real Madrid “opportunity”

Ibrahima Konate has left Liverpool and will look to finalise his next move in the near future, with “at least two proposals” from the Saudi Pro League.

Konate was confirmed to be leaving Liverpool on Sunday evening, with the centre-back unable to agree terms on a new contract.

It leaves him searching for a new club in a summer in which he will represent France at the World Cup, complicating negotiations over a move and his preparations for the campaign ahead.

With Konate seemingly expecting to stay at Liverpool as recently as last week, his options are likely open at this stage.

But transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano claims the 27-year-old has already received “at least two proposals” from Saudi Arabia.

And despite Real Madrid informing Liverpool in November that they had ended their interest, Romano suggests they could now return with a bid for Konate as a free agent.

“They left the conversation with agent and player because they didn’t want to disrespect Liverpool after what happened with Trent Alexander-Arnold,” he explained on YouTube.

“The two clubs share a very good relationship and so that’s why Real Madrid left the conversation.

“Now we have to see, with Konate as a free agent, if Real Madrid decide to return for him.

“Real Madrid are looking for defenders, so for sure Konate on a free could be an opportunity.”

Romano added: “He has several opportunities including Saudi, so we have to see what’s going to happen there.”

From a Liverpool supporters’ perspective it would certainly be disappointing to see Konate head to Saudi Arabia as he reaches his prime years as a top-level centre-back.

Despite the attempts to market the Saudi Pro League as one on the rise it is impossible to escape the sense that it is a retirement league – not least with players regularly seeking a swift exit.

Konate has previously expressed a desire to represent his boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain and it is still possible he receives an offer from the European champions.
