Arsenal have confirmed their first major transfer news of the summer. Karl Hein has joined Werder Bremen permanently. The young goalkeeper spent last season on loan in Germany. His future away from North London has been confirmed.
Arsenal finally confirm Karl Hein transfer news
The Gunners confirmed on their official website, that Hein will join Werder Bremen on a permanent deal in July 2026. The Estonia international spent the 2025/26 season on loan with the Bundesliga side and will now stay there full-time. The 24-year-old joined the North London side in 2018 from Nomme United. He came through the academy system before making his senior debut in 2022 during a Premier League game against Brighton.
According to Football London, the Estonian was respected inside the team, regular football was always hard to come by. David Raya remained the clear first-choice goalkeeper. Last season, he moved to Germany to play more regularly. During his loan spell, he mostly worked as the Die Werderaner’s backup goalie. They recently lost goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who is set to join Freiburg this summer. The Bundesliga club quickly signed him on a permanent deal before next season.
Karl Hein’s career statistics, as per FotMob.
Team Matches Goals Conceded Clean Sheets
Werder Bremen 2 4 1
Real Valladolid 32 70 5
Reading FC 5 8 1
Arsenal 1 3 0
Estonia (National Team) 45 72 6
Injuries and competition slowed Karl Hein
Hein’s time at the Emirates never fully took shape the way many fans expected. The goalie showed promise at a young age and gained experience during loan spells away from the team. Before his move to Germany, he also spent time on loan at Reading FC and Real Valladolid.
Still, breaking into Arsenal’s starting lineup was difficult. Raya played well under Mikel Arteta, and the team almost never changed goalkeepers during important matches. Things became harder for him after he suffered a hand injury during training earlier this year. The injury needed surgery and kept him out for the rest of the season.
Even after that setback, Die Werderaner’s continued to show faith in the goalie. Club officials in Germany praised his quality after confirming the transfer. According to Werder Bremen’s official website, Sporting director Clemens Fritz spoke well of the Estonian as a goalkeeper with high quality. He also added that the club are happy to move forward with him as their new first-choice option.
The Estonian also shared his happiness after the move became official. According to Werder Bremen, he reportedly feels comfortable in Bremen from the start and was excited to be there.
Fresh start could now help his career
For many young players, leaving a big club can become the best move for long-term growth. That now feels true for Hein as well. At the Emirates, he never played regularly. At Werder Bremen, he can easily get good playing time. The Bundesliga side clearly feel he can become an important player for them. For goalkeepers, confidence and regular football are very important for development.
The Gunners fans have taken the news of the transfer well. Many believe the goalie deserves the chance to finally become a regular starter after waiting patiently for years. Even though his Arsenal journey is now over, he still leaves on good terms from supporters and people inside the squad.
Author’s Opinion
Hein’s move feels right for both sides. The Gunners already had strong competition in goal, while the goalkeeper needed regular football. Die Werderaner now gives him a real chance to improve, grow, and finally become a trusted first-team player.
