Arne Slot already linked with top European job days after Liverpool sack

Arne Slot was only informed of his dismissal by Liverpool on Saturday morning, but the Dutchman is already subject of interest from Italian giants AC Milan.

Slot’s next move will be an interesting decision, as though he won the Premier League title at Liverpool there is now a perception he failed at his first top job.

The step up from Feyenoord to Liverpool was a considerable one and many feel he failed to grasp the scale of the task both on and off the pitch at Anfield.

Nevertheless, his reputation is understandably strong, and the Mail‘s Simon Jones has now reinforced early claims he could take over at AC Milan.

Milan are “considering an approach” after sacking Max Allegri, though departed Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is already set to meet the club.

In a bittersweet twist for Slot, interest from the San Siro comes after Andoni Iraola backed out of talks to potentially take the Milan job.

Iraola is now poised to become Liverpool head coach with negotiations ongoing over a long-term contract.

Italian bookmaker SNAI has Slot as favourite to become next Milan head coach with odds of 3/1, placing him ahead of Vincenzo Italiano (7/2) and Xavi (6/1).

Slot ‘offered’ to Milan – would he take job this summer?

But whether he would make the switch to the San Siro so soon after leaving Liverpool is unclear, particularly as this could be viewed as essential downtime after a demanding job.

Corriere dello Sport, however, claim Slot’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has presented him as an option to Milan senior advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Reporting on Sunday, the Mail‘s Lewis Steele wrote: “He is not desperate to jump straight back into a new job.

“If the right opportunity does arise, though, Slot might listen.”

Milan finished fifth in Serie A with 70 points – 10 more than Liverpool who came fifth in the Premier League – meaning they missed out on a place in the Champions League.

They will instead enter the Europa League and are seeking “a more game-oriented manager, capable of focusing on youth and not tied to lavish transfer budgets.”

Whether Slot suits that profile, particularly given reports of “frustration” from Liverpool’s academy staff over his support for their work, is up for debate.
