Atletico Madrid emerge as frontrunners for Marc Cucurella ahead of Barcelona

Marc Cucurella is open to leaving Chelsea this summer following a disappointing season which saw the club miss out on European qualification.

Cucurella has openly criticised Chelsea’s project, stating that the club ‘lacked experience’. He is also upset about the sacking of manager Enzo Maresca in January.

Cucurella has been linked heavily with Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid also rate him highly.

The Athletic now reports that Atletico are the frontrunners to sign him, with the club better positioned financially. They do not need to sell a player before signing him, unlike Barcelona.

Sporting director Mateu Alemany is leading the Rojiblancos’ pursuit as they seek to strengthen at left-back this summer.

However, the Spain international has yet to decide on his next destination, giving Barcelona hope to secure his services.

The La Liga champions are ready to sell Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde to make room for Cucurella.

Real Madrid also appreciate the Chelsea left-back, but it is unclear whether they will make a move for him or have the financial means to do so.

A move to Manchester City has been ruled out contrary to some reports. The Cityzens are not in the market for a new left-back due to Nico O’Reilly’s performance last term.

Chelsea are said to be relaxed about his situation, considering that he has three years left on his contract.

New manager Xabi Alonso has spoken to Cucurella and he is aware of his intention to leave the club. His departure could pave the way for Jorrel Hato to secure a starting berth.
