Arsenal told three players to instantly sell after Champions League heartbreak

Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal to sell Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus in order to kick on next season.

The Gunners experienced a bittersweet end to the season, as they celebrated a first Premier League title in 22 years, but suffered heartbreak in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's side missed out on an historic double in cruel fashion, as they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Gabriel Magalhaes missed the decisive spot-kick to see PSG become back-to-back champions, and deny Arsenal a first European glory.

Despite the crushing loss, the Gunners came together less than 24 hours later to celebrate their landmark league triumph with a bus parade through north London.

Arteta's men will be desperate to build on this success next term, with the Champions League final arguably highlighting where they fall just short of Europe's very best.

Arsenal legend Petit believes the key to unlocking their full potential is out wide, and he called for some ruthless decisions here.

While Bukayo Saka is a shoe-in on the right wing, the Gunners have struggled to find adequate back-up options, with summer signing Noni Madueke proving hit-or-miss in the role.

On the left flank, responsibilities have been shared between Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, but neither have produced standout numbers to make the shirt their own.

Petit told talkSPORT's White and Jordan: "I think it's easy to know what Arsenal are missing, for me it's wingers.

"You need to have strong and powerful wingers with technical skills that can make a difference on the wings."

Then came Petit's ruthless call, as he urged Arsenal to sell both Martinelli and Madueke, as well as calling for big changes up front.

The Frenchman insisted it is time for Gabriel Jesus to be moved on, with the Brazilian playing an increasingly bit-part role due to injuries, and the arrival of other strikers - including Viktor Gyokeres.

However, Petit was also unconvinced by Gyokeres, who has struggled at various points this season since his £63.7million move last summer.

Outlining what he would like to change, he continued: "Before bringing new players, they have to show some players the exit door too…

“For me the likes of Martinelli, Jesus. Gyokeres - I don't know because he just came into the club.

"Trossard I would keep him. Madueke for me isn't good enough, I'm sorry to say that, but he must do much more than that to improve.

"But we definitely need wingers and probably one striker with pace, technical skills, great movement.

Justified calls?

While Petit's call for an attacking overhaul might seem drastic, it is nothing new, with Arsenal frequently being linked with wingers in a bid to increase their attacking firepower.

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers has been among those touted as an option, as the Gunners seek an upgrade on their current players.

It isn't hard to see why, with Martinelli managing just one Premier League goal and four assists all season, despite netting an impressive six times in 14 Champions League outings.

This has led to him being rotated with Trossard, who, despite chipping in with a huge goal against West Ham, only netted on five other occasions in the league this term.

Meanwhile, Madueke has eight goals and four assists altogether, starting 24 games this term following his £52m arrival from Chelsea.

As for Petit's concerns up front, Gyokeres is yet to fully convince fans of his worth, despite hitting the 20-goal mark in all competitions.

The Swede has enjoyed a solid debut season in north London, but was dropped to the bench for the Champions League final, with Kai Havertz preferred at centre-forward.

And with the Gunners no doubt keen to strengthen their frontline, they may look to offload Jesus, who has just 32 goals in 123 games in an injury-hit four years since joining the club in 2022.
