James Milner officially announced his retirement from football on Monday, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 24-year career at the top level and 24 seasons in the Premier League at the age of 40.

The former Liverpool vice‑captain departs the game as the Premier League’s all‑time record appearance maker with 658 outings in the competition.

During his eight years at Anfield, Milner became a byword for reliability, racking up 332 appearances in all competitions, scoring 26 goals and helping the Reds lift six major trophies in the Jurgen Klopp era.

From left‑back to midfield and even the odd stint at centre‑forward, he did it all for Liverpool, and it is no surprise that news of his decision has been met with a wave of tributes from former team‑mates and supporters alike

Now taking to Instagram, Liverpool legend Jordan Henderson wrote a short but sweet farewell message:

“Thank you for everything mate! What a career and you deserve absolutely everything you have achieved. It was an honour to share so many amazing memories together and we had some fun along the way. Role model and inspiration to so many people and that will continue forever. Enjoy some time with the family now and good luck with whatever is next! Legend.”

It was only a few months ago that Milner wrote his name into the history books by surpassing Gareth Barry’s record to become the Premier League’s outright appearance leader.

Having gone from teenage debutant at Leeds to Champions League and Premier League winner at Liverpool before ending his playing days at Brighton, the veteran midfielder has seen and done almost everything the English game has to offer.

It remains to be seen what Milner will do next, but it would be no surprise to see him involved in coaching in the future.
