Mikel Arteta sent message about potential signing after Arsenal submit£104M offer

Micah Richards has backed Arsenal to make a blockbuster move for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, adding fresh momentum to one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer stories.

The former Manchester City defender believes Álvarez possesses the quality, versatility and winning mentality needed to elevate Arsenal to the next level as Mikel Arteta’s side look to strengthen their attack ahead of the new campaign. Richards’ comments arrive amid growing speculation linking the Argentina international with a move away from Atlético despite the Spanish club’s public insistence that the striker is not for sale.

ARSENAL have been heavily connected with Álvarez in recent weeks, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions are prepared to make an aggressive push for the 26-year-old. Several outlets have claimed the Gunners are willing to explore a deal worth more than £100 million, while Atlético are understood to value the player significantly higher.

Álvarez has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards following an impressive season in Madrid. The former Manchester City star has attracted interest from a number of elite clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona, creating the prospect of a major transfer battle during the window.

Reports in Spain indicate Barcelona have already explored a deal, although Atlético have repeatedly stressed their desire to keep the Argentine at the club

‘Kai Havertz is outstanding in terms of technical ability and Viktor Gyokeres has done well in his first season. But if they could get someone like Julian Alvarez, that would just give Arsenal something different.

‘He’s one of the best strikers in world football going into the World Cup and he’s already won one of those with Argentina.

‘I think they also need another left-winger and another centre midfielder. Bringing in [Christian] Norgaard has worked to a certain degree in terms of his temperament and Myles Lewis-Skelly has shown he can definitely do a job in there.

‘But to get the best out of someone like [Martin] Zubimendi you need to be a little bit higher so he can get on the ball and dictate the game from there.

‘So maybe they can get someone else in the midfield alongside Rice who is more box to box, more energetic and aggressive.

‘If they get that, a new striker and another winger they can compete for the next two, three, four years now – that’s how good I think they can be.’

Richards’ endorsement reflects a wider belief among pundits that ARSENAL still require another elite attacking option despite their recent success. The club have been linked with several forwards, but Álvarez’s ability to play centrally or across the front line has made him an especially attractive target for Arteta. His experience of winning major honours with both Manchester City and Argentina is also viewed as a significant asset.

However, any move remains complicated. Atlético have dismissed reports of ongoing negotiations and insist they have no intention of selling one of their most important players. The Spanish side are reportedly prepared to reject offers in excess of €100 million, setting up what could become one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer.
