Liverpool could bring a familiar face back: First clue about Iraola's coaching staff drops

In the wake of Arne Slot’s sacking, there are a number of questions that need answer from who his successor will be, who will join the new coach’s backroom staff and more.

Reliable Liverpool journalist David Lynch reports that there will be a familiar face in the backroom staff of Andoni Iraola if the Spaniard is appointed as Slot’s successor.

“I do expect there to be someone with a Liverpool background to come in and be part of that coaching staff,” he told Anfield Index podcast Media Matters host Dave Davis.

While Lynch remained coy on whatever gave him this insight, he was asked about Thiago Alcantara.

Davis said: “Thiago Alcantara, the fact he’s Spanish, the fact he’s got that link there with Liverpool and he’s played in the Premier League himself before and you get the Spanish coach, that just makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?”

Thiago or James Milner would make worthy additions to the Liverpool coaching staff

“We will miss him, but I understand that he has his own plans and that is a good thing. I hope one day he can come back because football needs people like him.”

Flick on Thiago by the way, after he recently left Barca:

“I told the staff and the players about my relationship with Thiago. When I was an assistant at Bayern and later became head coach, one of the first things I had to do was put Thiago on the bench, and it was not easy for…

James Milner has just announced his retirement from his long playing career, ending his Premier League career with the record for most games played (658), meaning he is also available for a new adventure.

It would be amazing to see one of Milner or Thiago join Iraola’s coaching staff, with reports indicating he is close to becoming the new Liverpool manager.

On one hand, in Thiago, Liverpool would get one of the most fascinating and technically blessed players of all time to support Iraola’s possession game.

On the other hand, with Milner, Liverpool get one of the most experienced players of all time, whose hard work and attitude have long since been praised by experts around the game.

Either would be a credit to Iraol’s coaching staff.
