Liverpool is one of England’s most iconic football clubs, competing in the Premier League and European competitions like the UEFA Champions League. Known for its attacking style, legendary players, and passionate fanbase, Liverpool has a rich history of domestic league… Read More about LIVERPOOL
Jarell Quansah is back in Liverpool’s plans. The Reds are in a defensive crisis after Ibrahima Konate’s shock exit. Liverpool transfer news now points to a possible return for their former academy man.
Jarell Quansah emerges as a key option after Konate’s blow
The Konate saga dragged on all season. Talks looked promising in April, the French defender even said the two sides were “close to an agreement.” But the deal fell apart over signing-on fees and agent payments. According toTEAMtalk, Liverpool have now “accepted” that Konate will leave Anfield this summer. It is a big blow for the club.
That puts their former academy graduate firmly back in the frame. The Reds sold the 23-year-old to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million (including add-ons) last summer, as per Transfermarkt. But they kept a buy-back clause, and that clause is now key. TEAMtalk reports Liverpool remain “huge admirers” of his potential and have been watching his progress closely.
Jarell Quansah for Bayer Leverkusen in 2025/26, as per Fotmob:
Competition Matches Tackles Interceptions Recoveries
Bundesliga 28 28 27 98
DFB Pokal 5 1 7 16
UCL 11 7 9 30
The defender has done well since leaving. Speaking to Bundesliga.com, he said, “I’ve started loving football again. It’s been refreshing for me, “ after a tough final year under Arne Slot. That form earned him a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.
Liverpool transfer news: Will the buyback be triggered now?
This is where Liverpool transfer news gets tricky. The 2026 buy-back clause was set at €80 million. That is too steep for FSG right now. Reports from Germany, covered by Football365, confirm the Reds will not trigger it this summer. They will wait until 2027, when the fee drops to €60 million.
That is a smart call. According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have already spent €60 million on the Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. They also need a right winger, a central midfielder, and a left-back this window. Waiting a year saves money and makes sense. The club also wants him back as a starter, not a squad player.
Leverkusen have made their stance clear too. He is part of their plans and not for sale.
Jarell Quansah and the bigger defensive picture at Anfield
Liverpool is not short of centre-backs right now. Van Dijk remains one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. Leoni and Jacquet both return from injury next season. Gomez is still at the club, too. Paying €80 million to bring back a player they sold a year ago never made much sense.
The better plan is to let him grow at Leverkusen for one more year. By 2027, Van Dijk and Gomez will be near the end of their deals. The Reds will need a senior centre-back by then. At that point, the academy graduate comes back cheaper, more experienced, and ready to lead, not just fill a gap.
There is also Greek defender Konstantinos Koulierakis on the radar, as per the earlier TEAMtalk report. Koulierakis wants to leave the now relegated Wolfsburg for a bigger club, and could be signed for a reasonable fee. Transfermarkt currently values him at around €25 million. But in terms of football pedigree, history with the club, and long-term fit, Jarell Quansah is still the top name in Liverpool transfer news.
The exit bomb has landed. FSG now needs to act smart this summer. All roads still lead back to their former academy man, just not yet.
