Barcelona want Piero Hincapie this summer. But the latest Arsenal news tells a different story. The Gunners have a contract hold over the Leverkusen defender and Barcelona may have no way around it.
Flick’s plan and why Piero Hincapie fits it?
Hansi Flick wants a new centre-back at Barcelona this summer. His top target was Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. That move collapsed over money and squad issues. Piero Hincapie is now the name on their list. The 24-year-old Ecuador international is left-footed, composed on the ball, and fits the left side of Flick’s back three.
According to the BBC, Barcelona see him as a cheaper and more realistic option than Bastoni. The spending at Barcelona this summer shows the club are serious. They have already committed €70 million to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, a statement move that tells you everything about how much trust the club have placed in Flick. Hincapie would be another major piece of that puzzle.
Hincapie’s stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FotMob:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Duels Won Tackles Interceptions
Premier League 25 1 2 100 48 26
EFL Cup 3 0 0 16 8 1
Champions League 10 0 0 41 21 9
What Arsenal actually control?
On the Arsenal news front, the Gunners are in a strong position here and Barcelona know they cannot do much about it. Hincapie joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Leverkusen last summer, and the deal came with a buy option worth £45 million. Arsenal have already sorted personal terms with the defender, and he is set to sign a five-year deal at the Emirates Stadium when the time comes, as per the Goal.
Leverkusen also pushed for a 10 percent sell-on clause in the deal, which means the German club will earn a cut from any future sale as well. This deal hands Arsenal a strong legal and financial hold over the whole situation. In Premier League terms, signing a 24-year-old left-footed centre-back who has won the Bundesliga and grown into a solid defender for just £45 million is great value for money, and Arsenal know it.
Barcelona face uphill battle to hijack Piero Hincapie deal
The football world has seen Barcelona pull off surprise signings before, but the contract situation here gives them very little room to work with. Once Arsenal use their purchase option, any bid for Hincapie would have to go straight through the north London club and not Leverkusen. This changes things completely for Barcelona. Arsenal have no real reason to sell a defender they planned for, brought in on loan, and have already agreed terms with.
Mikel Arteta wants a back line that defends well and plays with the ball. Piero Hincapie fits that perfectly. This deal feels less like a race and more like a done thing. Barcelona will keep looking at other options as Flick builds his squad for next season. But unless something changes, Hincapie looks set to stay in north London.
Author’s Opinion
Piero Hincapie to Arsenal feels done. Barcelona can look all they want, but once the Gunners trigger that purchase option, the door shuts completely. Arteta identified him, brought him in, and built his entire back line around him. The plan was always to keep him long term. Why would they sell now? This was never really a race to begin with. Flick will have to find his answers elsewhere, and quickly.
