Chelsea Declare Young Defender Untouchable Under Xabi Alonso: Reports

As per reports, Chelsea have firmly turned down a series of bids for highly-rated defender Josh Acheampong with the youngster now deemed totally untouchable. The Blues have rejected approaches from suitors, including admirers across Europe and a pair of Premier League rivals, with sources adamant the player is simply not for sale.

The versatile defender, who can play at right-back and centre-back, has long been considered one of Chelsea’s most promising academy graduates. The club see him as a key part of the new project under incoming boss Xabi Alonso despite a frustrating campaign for regular minutes.

That stance has been described as a real one, with admirers from all but one or two corners of the European game. Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have all been mentioned as possible suitors for the England youth international in recent months.

Acheampong, who celebrated his 20th birthday last month, rejected the chance of regular football at Borussia Dortmund last year to continue to fight for his place. He is still bound to Stamford Bridge on a deal that runs until 2029 and his valuation is expected to rocket if he becomes a regular starter.

Alonso will officially begin work at Stamford Bridge on July 1 with a long pre-season to assess the squad. His past tendency to play with a back-three could be a real plus for the Englishman, having played in a number of defensive positions.

Why Chelsea Still Want Fresh Centre-Back Reinforcements Despite Keeping Acheampong

But Chelsea’s desire to push ahead with a serious defensive rebuild this summer will not be deterred by the retention of Acheampong. Sources suggest the club could look to make two centre-back signings, one experienced operator and a younger option, depending on which players ultimately leave the squad.

Those plans are necessary because of some alarming numbers from an otherwise forgettable league season. Chelsea conceded 52 goals in 2025/26, nine more than the previous season, showing a structure in dire need of repair.

Alonso is apparently being handed more power in recruitment, with the club prioritising centre-back, central midfield and the left wing. Ousmane Diomande has been identified as a target for a possession-based system as the Blues look to recreate the defensive solidity their new manager built so impressively at Bayer Leverkusen.
