Chelsea have completed the signing of former Arsenal defender Katie McCabe on a free transfer, in a significant move within the Women’s Super League market.
The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international is said to have agreed terms with the London club following the expiration of her contract at Arsenal, bringing an end to a long association with the Gunners. While CHELSEA have not yet released a detailed formal statement confirming all contractual terms, the deal is being widely reported as completed and finalised ahead of the new season.
McCabe, a versatile left-sided player capable of operating as a full-back or wing-back, leaves Arsenal after establishing herself as one of the most influential figures in their squad. During her time at the club, she made more than 200 appearances, contributing goals, assists and leadership both domestically and in European competition.
The defender is also the captain of the Republic of Ireland women’s national team, where she has earned over 100 caps and played a central role in guiding her country to their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in 2023.
Her experience on the international stage is expected to be a key asset for Chelsea as they look to strengthen their squad depth and maintain their dominance in English women’s football.
Chelsea FC Women have been active in the transfer market this summer as they look to reinforce multiple positions ahead of another campaign in which they will be expected to compete for the Women’s Super League title. McCabe’s arrival adds both experience and tactical flexibility, with the player capable of contributing in defensive and attacking phases on the left flank.
McCabe herself is widely regarded as one of the most consistent performers in the league, known for her aggressive pressing, set-piece delivery and ability to drive forward in transition. Her leadership qualities are also expected to play a role in the dressing room, particularly in a squad that has seen several changes in recent windows.
Katie McCabe leaves Arsenal after a decorated spell in north London, where she won multiple domestic honours and became a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium. Her departure marks one of the most high-profile moves of the Women’s Super League off-season.
McCabe is set to link up with her new CHELSEA teammates for pre-season preparations shortly after July 1st
