Chelsea have now quietly asked about signing£36m Liverpool player this summer

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has decided to become a free agent this summer, and Chelsea have reportedly made an enquiry over signing him this summer.

The Blues are keen to strengthen their squad this season in order to give the best possible backing to incoming manager Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard has already asked for two new centre-backs from the club, potentially opening up the chance for him to operate in a back three at Stamford Bridge.

If Chelsea signed Marquinhos, where would you rank him among the Premier League’s top centre-backs?

Chelsea make enquiry into Ibrahima Konate

Given the Blues’ recent financial sanction from UEFA, they will need to be careful with big transfer fees, and explore opportunities that can bolster their squad for a cut-price deal.

This is exactly what has happened with Ibrahima Konate, who after years of transfer talks has decided to leave Liverpool when his contract ends this summer.

Acknowledging this, according to The Athletic, Chelsea have made a ‘gentle enquiry’ into the services of Konate, who has his pick of clubs this summer.

Reports stated the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were leading the race to sign him, although Chelsea will feel they can offer him a regular starting berth.

He would form an exciting partnership with Levi Colwill, bringing experience competing at the top level of the Premier League with him to Stamford Bridge.

Konate’s wage concerns

Chelsea have built their current project on paying wages to players based on an incentive structure, determined by their performances on the pitch.

This does not fit in with the Frenchman’s current demands, and he would be alongside Reece James as the club’s highest earner at this stage.

This would obviously be offset by the fact they wouldn’t be paying a transfer fee, although threatens to cause unrest in the squad if he comes in as their top earner.

Chelsea are also targeting other central defensive options this summer. Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
