Anthony Gordon completed a £70million move from Newcastle United to Barcelona last week.
The summer transfer window officially opens for Newcastle United on June 15, but the club have already agreed one major deal.
The Magpies have sold 2025/26 top scorer Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £70million, the second-largest sale in the club’s history behind Alexander Isak.
Gordon scored 17 goals in all competitions for Newcastle last season, including 10 in the Champions League.
His first Champions League goal came against Barcelona in a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park back in September 2025.

Newcastle United strike deal with Barcelona
It’s the second successive season Newcastle have sold their top scorer following last summer’s £130million sale of Isak to Liverpool. But unlike that summer-long saga, Newcastle, Gordon and Barcelona quickly reached an agreement before the 2025/26 campaign was officially over.
Gordon will now head to the World Cup in North America as a Barcelona player.
The £70million deal also includes various add-ons and a sell-on percentage due to Newcastle should Barcelona and Gordon part ways in the future. Everton also banked a sell-on fee following Gordon’s £45million move to Newcastle back in 2023.
And leading Spanish outlet, Mundo Deportivo, claims Barcelona and Newcastle may also look to schedule a friendly match following Gordon’s transfer.
NUFC’s pre-season plans
Newcastle are set to travel to La Manga in Spain for a summer training camp at the end of July. The trip will include a yet-to-be-announced friendly match, however The Gazette understands that this will not be against Barcelona. St James’ Park sources are unaware of a friendly with Barcelona being organised, but would not rule out the prospect of a future meeting.
Newcastle are expected to have a couple of domestic friendlies before travelling to Spain and will host a game at St James’ Park in the week prior to the Premier League season getting underway. The club have already confirmed a friendly match against Premier League side Everton at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on August 12 (5:15pm kick-off).
The 2026/27 Premier League season is set to get underway the weekend of August 22. The fixtures for the season will be announced on June 19.
