Xabi Alonso has just experienced his first big win as Chelsea manager if reports are true

The upcoming summer window is massive for Chelsea, not least because it promises to be the start of a new era under Xabi Alonso. If reports are true, his first decision is the right one.

Chelsea continue to be linked with a whole host of new signings as the World Cup and summer window close in. But as things stand, Chelsea have not even confirmed the signing of Valentin Barco just yet.

Plenty of work needs to be done with Alonso front and centre, boasting the same amount of power in the transfer market as Chelsea’s quintet of sporting directors. But Chelsea’s squad itself needs sorting out.

Many will leave due to Chelsea failing to qualify for Europe. Some will leave because they deserve to be playing midweek games, while Chelsea must make up for the cash loss. But Josh Acheampong is staying.

Xabi Alonso gets Josh Acheampong decision right

In January, Acheampong was the subject of interest from Man City before they signed Marc Guehi. Even Vincent Kompany was keen to lure him to Bayern Munich and Premier League sides have been linked.

It has emerged that Acheampong has plenty of interest in his services, and Premier League clubs have already made enquiries. It comes after a season in which he was both in and out of Chelsea’s side.

Alonso and Chelsea want more experienced players and with the need to sell, a big offer for the Blues academy product will have been difficult to turn down. But, Alonso has made a decision on Acheampong.

Alonso has decided to keep Acheampong, and has made the Chelsea youngster one of the club’s so-called ‘untouchable’ players alongside the likes of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, ahead of the summer.

It is Alonso’s first tricky decision and he’s made the right call. The immediate reaction on social media was one of both relief and delight, from a fanbase that have often had to wave goodbye to certain players.

Chelsea fans have got used to bad news in Acheampong situation

Chelsea fans can be forgiven for thinking Alonso may have followed his predecessors and bit the bullet. Indeed, had Alonso had the same power as BlueCo’s other managers, it would not have been his choice.

How much would you SELL Acheampong for? 😤

It would have to be a hefty price…

In the past, Chelsea have sold academy products like Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount and plenty of other players. But Alonso recognises both the potential, and the connection Acheampong has with supporters.

Instantly, without even officially taking office yet, Alonso has got Chelsea fans onside with his decision to keep Acheampong. It will give Chelsea fans hope and the knowledge that Alonso knows what he is doing.
